Emirates Stadium side to snap up three new signings before transfer window slams shut?
Arsenal’s victory against Udinese on Wednesday evening not only provided the side with a ticket for today’s Champions League draw but also provides the platform for Wenger to bring in two of his main targets in Eden Hazard and Yann M’Vila.
Whilst a deal in principle had been agreed with Lille for Hazard, Wenger will now try to push the deal forward to land the youngster in a move worth £23m and also contact Rennes regarding defensive midfielder M’Vila who would be available at £12m-£15m.
Whilst it is late in the transfer window, the remaining six days are mostly the busiest and although this is untested territory for Wenger, the 61 year old manager and the Arsenal board will look to make their final adjustments quickly.
A question mark still lingers over a centre-back position whom many believe the side definitely require with Everton still holding out for a much higher fee than the Emirates side are prepared to pay, a striker is also on the list with Lazio’s Mauro Zarate close to completing a switch to the Premiership too.
It appears that Arsenal are at least in advanced negotiations to snap up one of the trio named by this source but could the Gunners really nab all three? Well Arsene Wenger will be very keen to start spending in earnest now that Champions League qualification has been secured, seemingly this fact was quite key in the process of signing new players.
It seems that the Emirates Stadium boss was being a little cagey about bringing in further additions to join Carl Jenkinson, Gervinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and finances secured by making it to the Champions League group stage were probably held back until Udinese had been dealt with. Also it stands to reason that major signings would not be keen on committing to a club until progress to the competition was guaranteed.
Yann M’Vila appears to be the player of the three nearest agreeing a move to North London. The Rennes midfielder may well be considered as a player who can add more steel to the centre of the park and the 21 year old may be even keener to leave his Ligue 1 side given that his side has not made the greatest start to the season, culminating in a 4-0 defeat to Montpellier on the weekend.
Eden Hazard is proving a tough nut to crack. The Belgian playmaker, considered a possible replacement for Samir Nasri, has seemingly stated his desire to stay at Lille after helping them to their first domestic title in over 50 years last term and into the Champions League. However some sources state his club will accept offers of around £25m for his services.
Lille have already sold Gervinho to Arsenal and Yohan Cabaye to Newcastle United this summer.
Of the three perhaps the biggest long shot is Lazio striker Mauro Zarate. The 24 year old has not been the most prolific marksman in Italy and there may not be a huge need to add more firepower to an Arsenal squad that already has the likes of Robin Van Persie, the aforementioned Gervinho, Marouane Chamakh and Nicklas Bendtner to call upon.
The one time Birmingham City loanee has managed to net 25 times in over 100 appearances for his Rome based club so it would seem unlikely Wenger would feel that the uncapped Argentine would offer anything to his starting line-up.
