Stamford Bridge side plan big money move for Allianz Arena hero.
Chelsea are reportedly considering a shock move to sign Bayern Munich playmaker Franck Ribery as Andre Villas-Boas appears to have admitted defeat in the club’s pursuit of Tottenham star Luka Modric. Stamford Bridge owner Roman Abramovich has long admired the winger and will hand his Blues boss significant funds to help attempt to lure the Frenchman to West London.
Former Marseille man Ribery is now in his fifth season at the Allianz Arena and saw his Bavarian side surrender the Bundesliga title to Borussia Dortmund last term before being unceremoniously knocked out of the Champions League by Inter Milan, events that led to manager Louis Van Gaal losing his job.
Chelsea have been linked with a number of players seen as key to adding more creativity to a midfield that possesses a great deal of brawn in the shape of Michael Essien, Ramires and John Obi Mikel but less in the way of forward momentum, save for Frank Lampard and youngster Josh McEachran.
The club’s wide options are also thinning. Florent Malouda at 31 is getting on in years, Yuri Zhirkov has been sold and Yossi Benayoun may also be on his way out. Spaniard Juan Mata was brought in to rectify that problem and the adaptable attacker can also fill in up front but Villas-Boas is looking for another ‘marquee’ signing.
Ribery has been a big success in Germany but may feel that the time is right for a new challenge but a move for the talented attacker will not come cheap as he has four years left on his current contract. Chelsea are thought to be ready to offer up to £35m, which seems a fair price for a player aged 28.
The experienced Bayern Munich man is known for playing out wide but can also feature in the hole behind the strikers and it is in this role that Villas-Boas may see Ribery featuring as he helps link midfield and attack.
