Arsenal are contemplating a £46million double bid for French midfielder Yoann Gourcuff and Yann M’Vila.

The Gunners are in desperate need for strengthening in the middle of the park and could make a statement of intent to their rivals with the swoop.

The departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, for a combined £58million, allied with injuries and suspensions, has highlighted the weakness in the Gunners midfield.

The 8-2 humiliation by Manchester United on Sunday has kicked started a last-minute recruitment drive, with Andre Santos and Per Mertesacker set to move to the Emirates.

Monaco forward Park Chu-Young is also on his way after manager Arsene Wenger hijacked his move to Lille.

Lyon playmaker Gourcuff has been on Wenger’s radar for some time and a £26million bid could be tabled by as early as this evening.

The 25-year-old is viewed as a straight replacement for Fabregas but the Ligue 1 club will be unwilling to let one of their stars go so close to the transfer deadline.

M’Vila, 21, is wanted to add more steel and bite to the Arsenal midfield, with Wenger already having a £12million bid rejected.

Rennes are understood to want closer to £20million for the France international and the Gunners boss may match their valuation in his hour of need.
