Anfield flop heads to France.
Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole has joined French side Lille on a season-long loan.
The 29-year-old rejected a late offer from Aston Villa to move to the Ligue 1 team, with the lure of Champions League football too much to resist.
The England international only joined the Reds last summer but failed to establish himself in the side under manager Kenny Dalglish.
The Scot was happy to let Cole restart his career elsewhere to get his £90,000-a-week wages off the payroll.
Lille will not pay all of his salary but will pay a huge chunk.
Cole will travel to training each day by the Eurostar from London so as to be close to his young family.
“As we approach the closing of the summer transfer window, the LOSC, Liverpool and Joe Cole have reached agreement for the loan of the England player,” said a statement on Lille’s website.
“Cole has committed to the team for the rest of the season.
“With the arrival of England international Joe Cole, LOSC has clearly added to its squad both in quantity and quality.
“The club is pleased and proud that the challenges facing us and our project has attracted a player of this magnitude.”
This deal could allow Lille winger Eden Hazard to leave the club with both Liverpool and Arsenal interested.
