Anfield boss keen on Etihad Stadium attacker.
Liverpool are preparing a last ditch £15m offer for Manchester City winger Adam Johnson in a deal that is likely to be accepted by Roberto Mancini.
Whilst Mancini would very much like to keep hold of Johnson he is aware that the England international is after first team football and with the likes of Silva and now Samir Nasri able to play his preferred positions the 24 year old is keen on a move.
Although Liverpool have already invested heavily this summer they believe one more winger could prove fruitful especially with Johnson able to play both right and left. Although Kuyt is primarily used on the right the Anfield club are prepared to push the Dutchman further forward to make room for Johnson.
In many ways there would be a certain symmetry to a move to bring Adam Johnson to Anfield and not just in the fact that the signing of the right winger would add natural balance to the club’s attacking third. The Man City man and new Liverpool signing Stewart Downing were of course once team-mates at Middlesbrough and could now, according to this source, be plying their trade at Anfield on opposite wings.
The England international will find first team football hard to come by following the arrival of Samir Nasri from Arsenal, indeed the 24 year old was by no means a regular before the Frenchman’s arrival, notching up 15 Premier League starts last season along with 16 more appearances from the bench.
Indeed the right winger had run-ins with Roberto Mancini about his lack of first team action early on in his career at Man City and perhaps the chance to move on and secure regular first team football will appeal to the Sunderland born winger.
Currently Liverpool use Dirk Kuyt out on the right but Dalglish is thought to favour a more natural option to fill that role even though the Dutch international has become a crucial player at the club over the past few seasons since he was converted into a wide player by Rafa Benitez.
Having spent over £60m on the likes of the aforementioned Downing, Charlie Adam, Doni, Jose Enrique and Sebastian Coates, Liverpool are clearly more than able to finance new additions and are set to offload David N’Gog, Christian Poulsen and send Joe Cole out on loan to Lille so there should be money in the pot to make Man City a significant offer.
Mancini may not like the idea of selling to a rival club but then if the offer is big enough he may feel that selling the England man makes sense. He has a number of other wide options including James Milner, David Silva and even Mario Balotelli who is also able to play out on the wing.
