Emirates Stadium and Old Trafford boss’s in fight to sign talented centre back.
Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson are set to go toe to toe in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund’s highly rated centre back Neven Subotic. Both Premier League boss’s are struggling defensively this term and are now ready to make significant offers to the Bundesliga side for the Serbian international.
22 year old Subotic was instrumental in helping Jurgen Klopp’s side to a domestic title success last term and speculation is rife that the former Mainz man may be keen on a high profile move. Dortmund may feel under pressure to consider offers for their top players after a less than convincing start to their Bundesliga and if they fail to progress to the knock out stages of the Champions League then offers may start to seem all the more tempting.
Arsenal boss Wenger has watched on as his side move from one average defensive display to another, thus far the North London club has conceded a mammoth 21 goals in ten Premier League matches. New signing Per Mertesacker has struggled to adapt to life in the English top tier though Laurent Koscielny has improved a great deal.
Thomas Vermaelen has recurrent injury problems that have restricted the Belgian to just seven Premier League starts in the past 15 months. Johan Djourou has been employed most recently as a right back, such are the consistent problems Wenger has had with players out with knocks. French veteran Sebastian Squillaci has seemingly been frozen out of the first team picture all together.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has similar problems. Nemanja Vidic has been out for large chunks of the season and the Scot has been forced to try various centre back combinations in the effort to produce a coherent unit in front of David de Gea.
Jonny Evans on the whole has been solid but Rio Ferdinand has been woeful and there are serious questions about the England man’s position in the defensive pecking order. Youngsters Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have done well when called upon but there is a sense that Ferguson needs another option at the back.
Smalling has in fact been most effective at right back, even though it’s not the former Fulham man’s favoured position.
Subotic is considered one of the best, if not the best, young centre back in Europe. The 6ft 4in former United States Under 20 international is also reportedly being tracked by Real Madrid and Man City.
