Arsenal are reportedly one of the leading candidates to sign FC Koln striker Lukas Podolski in January.

The Germany international has netted 10 goals in 13 appearances this season and, as ever, has been frequently linked with a move to a more high profile club.

Arsenal, in recent weeks, having been touted as potential suitors as Arsene Wenger scours the market for goalscoring reinforcements.

And now, according to Metro, Arsenal are ‘serious contenders’ along with Lazio to secure a deal for Podolski.

However, despite the Gunners reported to be pursuing the former Bayern Munich forward, Koln remain intent on keeping him at the club.

There may well be a need to beef up attacking options at the Emirates Stadium as there is still far too much of the goalscoring load being placed on the shoulders of Robin Van Persie and even the signings of Gervinho and Park Chu-Young have not remedied the situation.

Lukas Podolski is a player who seems to have been around for an age but the Polish born German international is still only 26 years of age and is back to his best form after an up and down time of it at Bayern Munich. Now back at his former club FC Koln the adaptable attacker is back in the goals. Last term he knocked in 14 to keep his side clear of the drop and has managed nine in 12 games this campaign but it is perhaps his national team form that has most attracted Arsene Wenger.

The stylish forward has notched up a hugely impressive 43 goals in 95 caps and may well be tempted by a move to the Premier League as his chances of tangible success at Koln are slim as they are outside bets even to clinch a Europa League qualification spot.

Wenger is apparently ready to sell Marouane Chamakh and is likely to offload both Nicklas Bendtner and Carlos Vela in the summer.
