Arsenal are reportedly in the hunt for a defender and could turn their attention to Borussia Dortmund’s Neven Subotic

Arsene Wenger is reportedly far from happy with his defenders recent displays and will be further annoyed after Per Metersacker’s clumsiness resulted in a goal for Norwich on saturday and although Arsenal went on to win the game, the alarm bells are ringing for Wenger who is keen to strengthen in January and sees Subotic as an ideal candidate to shore up the defense.

Its thought that Wenger is ready to bid for Subotic and reports in Germany are suggesting that a bid of around £22 million would force the German club to listen, however it is not known whether Wenger will spend that much money on a defender.

Having conceded a mammoth 22 goals in 12 Premier League matches it would seem sensible for Arsene Wenger to consider bringing in defensive reinforcements and perhaps such a move may need to be made in January to avoid the possibility of missing out on a top four finish, the very least the North London club will look to achieve.

Neven Subotic is considered one of the hottest defensive prospects in Europe and his centre back partnership with Matts Hummels was one of the main reasons Borussia Dortmund managed to secure a Bundesliga triumph last term. Jurgen Klopp’s side conceded just 22 goals in 34 domestic league matches and have let in just nine in 13 in the current campaign.

Wenger did bring in Per Mertesacker to stabilise the club’s back-line but thus far the German has struggled to adapt to life in the English top tier but clearly the experienced giant has what it takes to up his game but there are still injury concerns over Thomas Vermaelen and though Laurent Koscielny has improved a great deal there may well still be a need to bring in more options.

Clearly Arsene Wenger is not known for splashing the cash but the need to do so may well have been compounded by a lengthy period without tangible success and given that the Arsenal boss is known to be an admirer of the Serbian international he may well feel he needs to meet the asking price for the 22 year old.
