Arsenal have stepped up their search for a top-class striker with an enquiry for former Tottenham target Leandro Damiao.

Italian giants Juventus have tracked Internacional’s Brazil forward all year and are hoping to finalise a deal for next summer.

But Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has now expressed an interest in signing the 22-year-old in the looming January window.

Arsenal will face stiff opposition from Lazio if they wish to land Germany star Lukas Podolski in January.
It has been reported that Arsene Wenger is considering a move for the Cologne striker when the transfer window re-opens and has sent scouts to watch him in action.
Podolski himself has revealed that he could be ready to leave the Bundesliga club with which he has a close affection once again.

The Poland-born forward came through the ranks at Cologne, establishing himself as an integral part of the first team before a big-money switch to German giants Bayern Munich in 2006.

Arsene Wenger is apparently desperate to bring in attacking reinforcements in January and has whittled down a long list of possible targets down to two. These two sources believe that the Gunners boss will look to bring either a Brazilian or German international in to partner Robin Van Persie up front to offer much needed support for the Arsenal skipper.

Robin Van Persie has netted an incredible 17 goals thus far this season, that makes up almost 50% of the club’s total goal tally for the season and even though Wenger brought Gervinho and Park Chu-Young to the Emirates Stadium over the summer it seems that more options are needed to help in the North London club’s push for a top four finish.

Leandro Damiao is one of the hottest prospects in South America and the Internacional man is very much an in form striker. The 22 year old netted 40 goals in 2011 and is a Copa Libertadores winner and now a regular in the Brazilian national team set-up. The powerful forward has been linked with a move to Tottenham and Harry Redknapp’s side have previously brought Sandro from the same club so a move for the youngster can not be ruled out.

Internacional are thought to want at least £18m for Leandro and that may be a price tag that scares off Wenger, who is not known as a boss who likes to splash the cash extravagantly.

Lukas Podolski may be a more likely signing as the 26 year old Polish born German international has European experience and is also in form and a more adaptable option than Damiao as he can play out wide as well as in an orthodox striking role.

Wenger is thought to be ready to offload Marouane Chamakh, Nicklas Bendtner and Carlos Vela to make way for new striking alternatives.
