The agent of Athletico Madrid defender Diego Godin says the English giants have been targeting his client

Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have been chasing Athletico Madrid defender Diego Godin, according to his agent.

The 25-year-old was part of Uruguay’s Copa America winning side during the summer and has impressed for both club and country, drawing the attention of Europe’s elite clubs.

“As I said, Godin is talked about a lot in England, there are clubs like Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal who are also quite careful about certain players,” his agent, Diego Heredia Triguero told Calciomercato.com.

“I’ve spoken a little to all of them. But real negotiations have not yet been launched.”

Though Arsenal’s back line has improved over the past couple of months, following some horrendous performances at the beginning of the season, Arsene Wenger apparently still believes his North London side could do with a new addition to give his Gunners side more strength in depth.

Diego Godin may well be an ideal signing in this regard. The 25 year old Uruguayan is considered one of the most solid centre backs in La Liga and after three solid years at Villarreal the Rosario born defender moved to Atletico Madrid in August 2010 and has continued to impress.

Andre Villas-Boas has also identified the Vicente Calderon man as a potential signing and the Chelsea boss also has had issues with his defence this season.

Wenger brought in Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci in over the summer of 2010 and then added Per Mertesacker in August but still more needs to be done to beef up the Emirates Stadium defence.

Thomas Vermaelen is a consistent performer but has had injury concerns. Koscielny has drastically improved this term whereas Squillaci appears to have run out of second chances after one too many errors. The jury is still out on Mertesacker though the experienced German should adapt well to life in the English top flight.

Arsenal have conceded a massive 23 goals in 14 Premier League games thus far this season.
