Old Trafford boss looks to make up ground on domestic and continental rivals with move to snap up much sought after duo.
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will next summer look to tempt Borussia Dortmund into selling two of their prized assets with an offer of around £50m for centre back Neven Subotic and playmaker Mario Gotze. The Old Trafford manager will look to his board to back him in the transfer market as he looks to continue to build for the future whilst also looking make up ground on his rivals in both the Premier and Champions Leagues.
The Scot has watched as his side has struggled for consistency this season and has earmarked a move to sign the young pair as he continues his policy of scouting the top worldwide young talent to populate his squad alongside those who could through the club’s academy.
With Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand both getting on in years and suffering with injuries of late Ferguson is looking to bring in another central defensive option. Phil Jones has performed well since his move to the club in the summer but it seems that youngster Chris Smalling may well be more suited to a right back position and though Jonny Evans has improved a great deal this season Sir Alex is keen to bring in another centre back.
Neven Subotic is considered one of the best young defenders in European football and the Borussia Dortmund man has formed a solid partnership alongside Mats Hummels a pairing that was instrumental in helping Jurgen Klopp’s side to the Bundesliga title last term.
The Serbian international has been dubbed the ‘next Nemanja Vidic’ and is said to be targeted by a number of Europe’s elite and the German club’s poor Champions League showing, one win in six, may lead Subotic to believe that a move to Man United would be beneficial to his career progression.
Ferguson has also targeted German international Mario Gotze who at 19 is already a national team regular and one of the most effective playmakers in European football. Dortmund have slapped a £30m price tag on the teenager and the Man United boss is ready to pay the price as he looks to add much needed creativity to his side’s attack.
Man United arguably lack a player who links midfield and attack and help create chances regularly, Ferguson is also in search of a goalscoring midfielder and arguably Gotze fits the bill on both counts.
Sir Alex Ferguson was said to be keen on the likes of Luka Modric, Samir Nasri and Wesley Sneijder last summer but now sees Gotze as being a more appropriate addition given his push to build a new generation of talent that can serve the clubs for years to come.
The Man United manager will hope that his board are willing to finance such a move and indeed Ferguson may need to trim his large squad before he can make such a bid.
