Emirates Stadium boss to bring in alternative attacking options.
Hugo Rodallega lined up as Marouane Chamakh replacement at Arsenal
Arsenal will offload Marouane Chamakh back to France next month and may make a shock swoop for Wigan forward Hugo Rodallega.
The Gunners were linked with a move for the Colombian forward during the summer, but eventually signed Ju Young Park from Monaco to compete for a spot with Chamakh.
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has denied a falling out with the striker, and said: ‘It has been made very public that he is in the last year of his contract, so you are going to try to find a story – but there is no story.
‘Hugo Rodallega is a professional and has been a very important member of this football club. He still is.’
It’s thought a bid of around £5million could be enough to prize the 26-year-old away from Wigan in January, and Arsenal would expect to make at least that amount back from the sale of Chamakh, who’s wanted by Bordeaux.
Arsenal could well do with an effective attacking alternative to Robin Van Persie or indeed a potential strike partner for the Dutchman and whilst Hugo Rodallega is not a huge name he is a determined customer who has managed to impress at struggling Wigan and perhaps more importantly, can be picked up fairly cheaply.
The Colombian has netted 22 goals in 87 Premier League starts for the Latics but has also been a chief tormentor running a lone furrow for the DW Stadium side so he shouldn’t be judged on goals alone.
Arsene Wenger clearly feels that the 26 year old Cali born striker has the potential to take the step up from perennial strugglers towards the top of the English top tier. Given that loaned out pair Nicklas Bendtner and Carlos Vela are unlikely to return to North London and with Gervinho working most effectively in a wide attacking role a move for Rodallega would be a wise and cost effective one to make next month.
