Reports are suggesting that Steven Pienaar could make a return to former club Everton as Spurs look to tempt Jack Rodwell away from Goodison Park.

Pienaar has barely been with the North London side for eleven months but could already be heading for the White Hart Lane exit after failing to make an impact over the past year.

The South African penned a four-year contract last January in a deal that is believed to be worth £3m, but has made only 15 appearances for the club.

Rodwell, on the other hand, has become a key component for the Toffees in 2011 after what has been a very productive year for the defensive midfielder.

Rodwell is contracted to the Merseyside club until 2015, but may have to accept an offer for the star given the club’s meagre finances.

Even with Pienaar offered as part of the deal, Spurs would still have to stump up around £20m if they are to prise the England international away from the Blues’ grip.

Now whilst this deal may actually suit Everton boss David Moyes, one has to wonder why Harry Redknapp would be interested in their prized asset. The Toffees midfielder is clearly a talented player with a great deal of potential but Harry Redknapp already appears to have two very suitable options in the defensive midfield role as it is.

With new signing Scott Parker doing a great job since his move West Ham and with impressive youngster Sandro acting as a back-up for the England man, why would the North London side need to make a move for Jack Rodwell?

The England international is said to be on Man United’s radar and a move to Old Trafford would seem more likely as Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to add more steel to his first team whereas in many ways Harry Redknapp doesn’t need to add to his complement at this stage.

That said, Steven Pienaar does appear to be heading to the Tottenham exit after failing to make an impact since his move to North London a year ago and a move back to his former Merseyside club may suit all parties.
