The action comes thick and fast as Man Utd (2/13) kick off the New Years eve fixtures as they entertain Steve Kean’s Blackburn side in the early midday kickoff.
Rovers (28/1) have shown signs of late that they could indeed survice the drop, after all scoring is not a problem for them as they have found the net in each of their last five games, and a draw at Anfield last week will have been a suprise to many.
However Manchester United are suddenly level on points with Man City at the Premiership summit, and as with every year, the Red Devils seem to shift up a gear this time of year, winning their last four games on the bounce and scoring 16 goals in the process.
The 2/13 on the home win does not tempt me but I’m prepared to back Utd with a two goal handicap at evens with Paddy Power.
Arsenal (1/4) face another London rival in QPR (12/1), fresh from the news that Thierry Henry will be rejoining the Gunners for two months. Whether he features is anyone’s guess, but with so much pressure on Robin Van Perise up front, the Highbury legend is sure to see some game time.
The Dutchman could be rested for this game with Gervinho leading the line which would be a welcome sight for any QPR fan. Wenger’s side have struggled for goals at home recently, finding the net in only three of their last three games at the Emirates.
QPR have failed to score a first half goal in their last four Premier League games which suggests a low scoring affair looks on the cards, and with Arsenal potentially Van Persie-less backing the 0-0 correct score at half time at 5/2 with Bet365 could reap rewards.
Elsewhere Chelsea and Tottenham should have relatively straight forward wins against lesser quality opposition. Villas Boas side face Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge and should have no difficulties, despite the coupon busting 3/10.
Spurs should have too much going forward for Swansea, despite Brendan Roger’s side boasting one of the best defensive home records in the league, and with Gareth Bale back to full fitness the 8/11 on offer for the away win looks too good to miss.
Norwich should have too much for Fulham, with the 13/8 tempting plenty of punters, while Wigan look good things at 9/2 to beat Stoke. Recent draws with Liverpool and Chelsea and wins away at West Brom and Sunderland should put Roberto Martinez’s side in good spirits, despite their 5-0 blip last week at Old Trafford.
On to New Year’s Day and those up and about or those still nursing hangovers will be treated to Sunderland v Man City. The Black Cats (6/1) have looked a different side under the management of Martin O’Neil while for the first time this season Man City (4/7) look under a little pressure. West Brom piled the pressure on last week and took the game to Mancini’s men – we should see a similar pattern at the Stadium of Light.
My heart is backing Sunderland at 6/1 but my head says back them with a +1 goal headstart at 11/8 with Paddy Power, which should get the new year off to a flyer!
Before I sign out for another week, I’ll take the opportunity to wish all Caughtoffside visitors a very Happy New Year and a healthy and profitable 2012!
See you on the other side……
