Hefty punishment for Swiss side.
Sion have had 36 points deducted for fielding ineligible players in the Swiss League, the country’s FA said on Friday.
The decision came two weeks after Fifa threatened to suspend Switzerland if Sion, who are taking their case to a civil court, were not punished.
On Thursday Sion announced that they had filed a criminal complaint against members of Fifa’s executive committee over its threat to suspend Switzerland from world football.
Sion said on their website that the threat made on 17 December by football’s ruling body amounts to unacceptable blackmail and a breach of basic legal rules.
There had been much speculation that had the Swiss FA not handed this hefty punishment to Sion then FIFA would have banned all clubs from international competitions leaving UEFA having to replace Basel in the Champions League, in all likelihood this would’ve led to Man United regaining their spot in the competition.
The 36 point deduction leaves Sion at the bottom of the Swiss Super League with minus five points, some 16 points from safety.
