Emirates Stadium boss sets sights on Nou Camp defender.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is moving for Barcelona defender Eric Abidal.
The 32 year-old left-back, who can also play at centre-half, is off contract in June and still to accept terms with Barca over a new two-year offer.
Wenger wants Abidal as experienced cover, though faces competition from AC Milan for the veteran.
Whilst Arsene Wenger is said to be looking to bring in a loan player to help cover for the mass of injured full-backs in his Arsenal squad, a permanent move for Barcelona veteran Eric Abidal would make make far more sense.
Abidal is of course more well known at plying his trade at full back but for much of this season he has ably filled in at the heart of the Barcelona defence due to injuries suffered by both Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique and it is this adaptability that would suit the Gunners down to the ground.
However Wenger would have to be willing to break his policy of handed just one year deals to players over 30 as the 32 year old French international is specifically looking for at least a two year deal but on this occasion the Emirates Stadium boss may be willing to compromise, such is the injury crisis his North London club find’s itself in.
First choice full backs Andre Santos and Bacary Sagna are out injured as are back ups Carl Jenkinson and Kieran Gibbs and on Monday youngster Francis Coquelin also suffered an injury, and he was only filling in at left back due to the lack of first team options left in the Arsenal squad.
