Arsene Wenger keen on bringing Internacional striker to the Emirates Stadium
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is said to be keen on landing Brazilian international Leandro Damaio after a lengthy period of having the Internacional forward scouted. The North London side are keen to bring in alternative attacking options after seeing the likes of Marouane Chamakh and Gervinho fail to provide able goal-scoring assistance to captain Robin Van Persie.
The powerfully built 22 year old striker has had fantastic season with his Porto Alegre side, notching up 40 goals in all competitions, form that has helped secure a regular spot in Mano Menezes’s national teal set-up.
North London rivals Tottenham are said to have made unsuccesful offers to sign Damaio and Wenger will look to his Gunners board to finance a significant bid for the striker who reportedly has a price tag in the region of around £20m, a fee that would represent a club record signing for the Emirates Stadium side.
Thus far this season Van Persie has netted 17 of Arsenal’s 36 Premier League goals and the club’s other recognised strikers have managed just five goals between them. The Dutch international is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract and with less than 18 months to run on his current deal Wenger may be concerned that the lack of support may lead to the skipper considering his future.
Managing to snap up a player of Damaio’s undoubted potential may send the type of statement of intent and ambition that may well help to convince Van Persie to sign a new deal.
Damiao is tipped to be set for a move to Europe and some sources are of the belief that Ligue 1 big spenders PSG are keen on the prolific striker and that Carlo Ancelotti is also lining up a bid for the Internacional front-man.
