Chelsea are reportedly looking at young German right back Mitchell Weiser to solve their right back issues in the long term.

The 17 year-old FC Koln star has yet to make a first team appearance, but it is his performances with his country’s youth teams that are thought to have impressed Chelsea scouts, earning comparison with Daniel Alves of Barcelona.

Weiser went to the 2011 FIFA U17 World Cup in the summer, helping Germany to a third place finish, and his form throughout the tournament – which included three goals – alerted plenty of scouts around the world to his ability.

Weiser is capable of playing on either flank, and his defensive doggedness, creativity in attacking areas and sheer athleticism are the qualities attracting big clubs to him.

Chelsea’s current options at right back are Jose Bosingwa and Branislav Ivanovic.

However, the former inconsistently blows hot and cold, while the latter appears better suited to central defence.

Though unlikely to be ready to be the immediate answer at Stamford Bridge, should Chelsea sign Weiser early it could prove a clever move.
