Old Trafford side capture young Etihad Stadium centre back.
Man United have snapped up 19-year-old City central defender Freddie Veseli in a shock transfer window deal. The Reds tied up the Swiss starlet, who captained his country to Under-17 World Cup triumph in 2009, yesterday – and Veseli headed into Manchester, dressed in a red jacket, to celebrate.
Veseli was seen as a good prospect at City, but he was frustrated at not making the breakthrough into the first team squad. That frustration increased recently when the Blues lost skipper Vincent Kompany and drafted 17-year-old defender Karim Rekik into the squad as cover.

This may prove to be a capture that Man City live to regret. Young Swiss defender Freddie Veseli is well thought of and is considered a hot prospect. The defender led his country to an Under 17 World Cup triumph back in 2009 but has struggled to persuade Roberto Mancini to give him anything in the way of first team action, even though he did impress on the club’s North American tour.
Sir Alex Ferguson has adopted a youthful transfer policy over the past couple of years, primarily looking to build for the future with the signings of top young players from across the world to help place alongside those coming through the Old Trafford ranks.
The Scot has signed the likes of Javier Hernandez, David de Gea, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones over the past two seasons and all four are now firmly part of the Man United first team picture.
Ferguson may well feel he could do with further defensive signings due to the fact that Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic have both struggled with injuries in recent seasons and are both in the latter stages of their careers.
