Sunderland have emerged as favourites to sign Wayne Bridge from Manchester City, beating Arsenal to his signature.

It is thought that the Gunners’ interest had cooled somewhat anyway, after Arsene Wenger saw Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs return to training after long term injury concerns.

Reading had also shown late interest in taking Bridge on loan, as their new Russian owners prepare to splash the cash, but it would appear that Premier League football appeals most to Bridge.

Cue obvious joke.

Bridge has now been at Manchester City for over three years, and has made just 42 league appearances.

At one time he was genuinely in competition with Ashley Cole to be England’s left back.

The Chelsea man has gone on to become arguably the best in that position in the world, while Bridge’s career has stagnated somewhat.

Perhaps it is time for that to turn around, and the Man City man is set for a medical today.

It is not known what the move will mean for Kieran Richardson, and the former Manchester United man could either be pushed further forward, or lose his place in the team.
