Arsenal are reportedly considering a shock swoop for Mathieu Flamini, who departed the North London club to sign for AC Milan in 2008.

The French midfielder left the Gunners for free at the end of his contract, and now seems set to do the same at the Rossoneri.

The difference is though that Flamini left Arsenal by choice, but now it appears that he will not be offered a new deal at the San Siro, leaving him free to sign elsewhere.

The reason Italian media outlets are reporting Flamini is unlikely to be offered a new contract at AC Milan is a simple one.

Injuries.

Flamini has suffered from multiple problems since moving to Milan, and has been waylaid for almost all of this season with a cruciate knee ligament issue.

He is likely to return to action this month, but it appears that AC Milan are ready to cut their losses on the player.

Arsene Wenger is still thought to rate Flamini very highly, and the scampering defensive midfielder could offer some great protection for the back line at the Emirates Stadium should the Gunners manager elect to gamble on his signing.
