Porto ace on way to Stamford Bridge?
Chelsea manager Andre Villas Boas has hinted that FC Porto forward Givanildo Vieira de Souza – better known as simply Hulk – could be his next signing.
The Brazil international forward was one of Villas Boas’ charges during his phenomenal spell as boss of Porto last season, and the Blues manager may attempt to arrange a reunion.
Speaking to Portuguese radio station TSF, Villas Boas gave a big clue to his summer transfer plans:
“Surely there will be a place to fill and I see room for a player like Hulk,” said the 34 year-old, who also gave strong indication he expected to stay at Stamford Bridge for the long term.
In 26 Primeira Liga appearances for Porto last season, Hulk scored 23 goals and provided 13 assists, making him one of the most destructive attackers in Europe.
He also played extremely well in Europe, scoring 8 goals and supplying 4 assists in 16 matches as Porto won the UEFA Europa League.
Hulk currently has a rather restrictive release clause of €100m (approximately £84m), but were a Chelsea transfer to go ahead, the Blues’ team selection could make interesting reading.
The left footed Hulk tends to play on the right of a front three, cutting in onto his favoured side to strike at goal, though he is also capable of playing through the middle.
The right-sided role is where Daniel Sturridge plays for Chelsea, and has been doing rather well all season.
Sturridge has stated that he hopes to play in a central striker position in the long term though, and perhaps that is what Villas Boas is planning for next season.
