Roberto Martinez is in high spirits following the news that his two star strikers could be fit to face Newcastle at the DW Stadium this Saturday…
Roberto Martinez says Franco di Santo and Hugo Rodallega are progressing well and both could play against Newcastle on Saturday.
Wigan’s striking options have been limited of late, with Franco Di Santo limping off during their 2-1 away defeat to Fulham and Hugo Rodallega sidelined in recent weeks due to an injury obtained in the home draw against Norwich in March.
However, Wigan fans will be happy to know that the pair are back in training ahead of this weekend’s crucial home clash with Newcastle.
The Wigan boss will be weighing them up as options for the Newcastle tie as his side look for more vital points in their bid to avoid relegation.
“Hugo rejoined the squad on Monday and we are waiting to see how much of a reaction there will be,” Martinez told the Evening Post.
“The work he has done over the past few days has been very positive, he is getting stronger by the day and he’s well in contention for the weekend.”
Martinez has also confirmed that Di Santo is progressing well and responding to treatment after he suffered a minor calf problem, with his situation being re-assessed later this week.
“The good news regarding Franco is we were able to get him off the field before he picked up a really serious injury,” added the Wigan boss.
“We’ll assess him again on Thursday or Friday, but he is reacting well to the treatment and we remain hopeful he will be okay.
“Thankfully we were able to avoid the ultimate damage in terms of soft-tissue injuries, which is a rupture. It’s important now that we get rid of the problem he has in his calf, try to wash it off and ensure he finishes the season on a high.”
