Dozy Athletic Bilbao fans miss Europa League final after Budapest balls up
More than 400 Athletic Bilbao fans heading to the Europa League final arrived in the wrong country after mixing up the names of two cities.
The confused Spanish supporters ended up in Budapest, Hungary – hundreds of miles away from the match in Bucharest, Romania.
According to Spanish TV channel Antena 3, the group of fans then attempted to make their way to the final on Wednesday but were unable to locate the Romanian capital on a map.
This must be a joke, surely?
At what point do you think the Bilbao fans realised the error of their ways? Perhaps on disembarking they noted that there were not all that many fellow Athletic fans and no Atletico Madrid supporters whatsoever.
What did they then do? Perhaps they went to a nearby pub to watch the game only to be told that the locals were not in any way interested in the Europa League and told to leave?
Also surely when the Bilbao fans arrived at the Spanish airport they were flying from, someone there could have informed them that they were in fact flying to an entirely different country but clearly it’s far more amusing to allow such a disastrous mix-up to occur rather than to be a helpful human being.
The plus side is that they did of course miss their side getting trounced by their La Liga opponents. Imagine how horrified they would have been if they had missed seeing their side win major honours.
You see, there is always a silver lining.
