Italian source TuttoMertactoWeb today state that Fiorentina will join AC Milan in the race to sign Liverpool midfielder Alberto Aquilani this summer. The 27 year old Italian international spent last term on loan at the San Siro but failed to garner the requisite amount of appearances in order to trigger a permanent bid for the former Roma and now the Anfield man’s future is in the balance.
A move back to Merseyside could well be on the cards if a decent enough offer is not made for the Liverpool man and given the poor campaign the club endured last term perhaps the return of a Aquilani’s undoubted quality would in fact be in the best interest as they look to break back into the top four.
Aquilani missed out on a place in Italy’s Euro 2012 squad and may feel that his continued presence in Serie A will help in his pursuit of a regular spot in Cesare Prandelli’s national team set-up.
AC Milan are cheekily still chasing the Liverpool man despite avoiding Aquilani from reaching a set number of appearances last term that would have meant that the Rossoneri would have to buy the player at the price determined by the initial loan contract and now they are clearly trying to pressure the club’s American owners into dropping that valuation.
Aquilani cost Liverpool £20m, although much of that fee was based on increments that are yet to have been reached, and it’s not surprising that the Premier League side are looking to get a significant fee for a player who clearly has a great deal of talent.
