Lazio captain arrested in match-fixing investigation

The captain of Lazio has been arrested by police investigating claims of match-fixing.

Midfielder Stefano Mauri, 32, was held along with former Genoa midfielder Omar Milanetto, police said.

Officers are searching more than 30 homes, including those of players, trainers and administrators of clubs in Serie A, Serie B and lower divisions.

Five people were also arrested in Hungary on suspicion of being part of an illegal international betting ring.

Prior to this arrest most of those questioned in connection with the ongoing match-fixing scandal have either been former players or professionals from the lower leagues but this high profile arrest confirms just how wide spread the allegations of corruption are.

Stefano Mauri is an Italian international who took part in the Euro 2012 qualifiers but did not make Cesare Prandelli’s finals squad. The 32 year old has become a cult hero at Lazio since his move to the Stadio Olimpico from Udinese in 2006.
