Arsenal are set to offer Salomon Kalou a chance to stay in the Premier League and hope to pinch the Ivorian from under the noses of Schalke.
The German club had been set to finalise a deal for the Champions League winner, released by Chelsea last week, but the North London outfit have entered the race with an eleventh hour offer.
Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, is an admirer of Kalou and considered bidding for him in January but was put off by the winger’s wage demands.
With the 26-year-old now a free agent, Wenger is set to offer him a bumper four-year deal to bring him to the Emirates. The Frenchman believes Kalou will increase competition for places in midfield and attack, as the Gunners look to mount a serious title challenger next term.
Kalou, who made 156 appearances for Chelsea but struggled to hold down a regular place at Stamford Bridge, has been promised a starting berth and lucrative salary by Schalke but remains interested in staying in England.
