UAE Pro League side Al Wasl are prepared to break the bank in a “serious” bid to bring ex- Chelsea striker Didier Drogba to Dubai, according to a club official.

However the Cheetahs’ former CEO Ashraf Ahmed Mohammed, the man who helped broker the deal that saw Diego Maradona arrive at the Zabeel Stadium, has questioned why the Champions League winner would want to move to the UAE.

Drogba, 34, is currently available on a free transfer after his deal with Chelsea expired at the end of the season and he has aroused interest at both Real Madrid and China’s Shanghai Shenhua.

Whilst a move to either China or Dubai could result in a massive pay-day it would effectively end Didier Drogba’s competitive career and whilst the Chelsea striker is clearly in the latter stages of a glittering career in the game he has shown over the last two months of the campaign that he still has a lot to offer at the very highest level.

Drogba had been troubled by injury and average form for much of the last campaign but the 34 year old pulled out all the stops to rack up four goals in his last seven games to secure major honours for his West London side.

A goal in the FA Cup Semi-Final against Tottenham was followed by a crucial winner in the first leg of Chelsea’s semi-final win over Barcelona. Then the Ivory Coast forward scored in the FA Cup final to help the Blues overcome Liverpool and then topped off a magnificent performance in the Champions League final by scoring a leveler in normal time and the winning spot-kick in the penalty shoot-out that saw his side defeat Bayern Munich on their own patch.

This source points out the very real possibility of interest from Real Madrid and surely Drogba would jump at a move to the Bernabeu ahead of moves to Shanghai Shenhua or Al Wasl, moves that he could still make in a year or two.
