Premier League duo Aston Villa and Sunderland are considering hijacking Southampton’s deal to sign Burnley striker Jay Rodriguez.
The Lancashire club confirmed last week that they had accepted a £7 million offer from newly promoted Saints for Rodriguez, who scored 21 goals in the Championship last season.
But Villa and Sunderland are now ready to match the offer for the forward, who was named in the Championship team of the season, according to The Daily Mail.
Villa named former Norwich boss Paul Lambert as manager over the weekend and the Scot has identified his front line as in the most need of reinforcement. The midlands club have already been linked with Norwich striker Grant Holt but the Canaries are reluctant to sell the 31-year-old.
Rodriguez, 22, is delaying signing for Saints while he awaits developments but the South Coast club are desperate to force through the move and may offer Burnley midfielder Richard Chaplow to sweeten deal.
Rodriguez began his career at hometown club Burnley, where he has scored 31 goals in 105 appearances.
