Former Barcelona star Ronaldinho has snubbed reported interest from the Premier League to join Atletico Mineiro in his native Brazil, according to ESPN Brasil.
The former world player of the year left Flamengo in acrimonious circumstances last month after claiming the Brazilian club owed him £12 million in unpaid wages.
Over the weekend, the 32-year-old’s brother and agent, Roberto de Assis, confirmed that negotiations with Atletico were progressing “very, very well” after Assis himself approached the club over the prospect of his brother joining.
Atletico Mineiro have now abandoned plans to sign former Lyon midfielder Juninho Pernambucano from Vasco da Gama.
Atletico play in the city of Belo Horizonte, halfway between Brazilian capital Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro. The club have struggled in recent seasons and have not won the Brazilian championship since 1971.
Ronaldinho has endured mixed fortunes since moving back home from AC Milan in 2010. He has been criticised by Flamengo fans for his attitude but helped the club win the Rio State Championship and qualify for the Copa Libertadores last season.
