According to well respected Dutch source Sport 1 Man United are set to make a €11 (£8.8m) bid for highly rated Ajax youngster Viktor Fischer. The teenager midfielder is on the fringes of the Amsterdam side’s first team who attracted a great deal of attention with his fine displays in this year’s NextGen Series, during which he netted seven goals to finish as the tournament’s joint top scorer.
Sir Alex Ferguson had sent a number of scouts to monitor the promising talents who shone at the NextGen Series, considered as a youth team version of the Champions League, and received glowing reports. Fischer is predicted to follow in the footsteps of highly rated countryman Christian Eriksen, who is also at Ajax and will star at the Euro 2012 finals.
The fee may seem a steep one to pay for a player who is yet to play a professional game for his Dutch Eredivisie but given that Fischer is considered one of the hottest prospects in Europe such a fee may well end up representing a bargain in seasons to come.
The Man United boss has been more willing to bring in youthful talent from outside the club’s academy in recent seasons, with the likes of Chris Smalling, Javier Hernandez, Phil Jones and David de Gea all moving to Old Trafford via this route. Ferguson would hope that Fischer could make a similarly effective introduction to the first team in a year or two, if indeed he can persuade Ajax to sell.
