Neither side will want to lose this opening game of the tournament as if they do, qualification from Group D looks much tougher. The final two matches then become must win, adding extra pressure to the performances.
Going into the clash between England and France, it is the latter that are the favourites for victory. Their form since the disastrous 2010 World Cup has been good and Laurent Blanc’s men can be backed at 6/4 to beat England.
The Three Lions are by no means being ruled out though. They have won both games under Roy Hodgson so far and certainly have the ability to beat France next week.
As things stand they are the outsiders to start Euro 2012 with three points, but at 2/1 they are getting plenty of backing. People have been encouraged by Hodgson’s men in the last two games, with their organisation coming in for particular praise.
As mentioned, this is a game neither side will want to lose and as such it could be a rather cagey affair, certainly to begin with. Therefore, a draw wouldn’t be too disastrous for either side and can be backed at 11/5.
It is France that could have a lot of the attacking play early on with their sense of freedom under Blanc at the moment, while England may well be content to stand firm and hit the French on the counter attack.
However it pans out, this should be a fascinating contest and certainly one of the picks from the first round of fixtures. It gets underway at 5pm on Monday evening.
