Euro 2012: Netherlands will not make racism complaint

The Netherlands will make no official complaint over the alleged racist abuse of players during an open training session in Poland.

Captain Mark van Bommel said the team’s black players were subjected to monkey chants in Krakow.
The Dutch FA said while some players said they heard racist abuse, the chanting was mixed with Polish fans making political statements.

This is hugely disappointing, but seemingly not unsurprising. One would have to wonder why the Dutch national team opted to not report such abuse to UEFA as clearly this may just be the tip of the iceberg in terms of the reception some players will expect to receive when the competition gets underway in earnest.

Also, quite how the fact the chanting was mixed with ‘political statements’ has anything to do with the offensive nature of the ‘monkey chants’ is more than a tad confusing but clearly something needs to be done and UEFA have to dish out some punishments before any such issue gets out of hand.
