Hughes to launch £3m attempt to lure Villa’s Given to QPR

Mark Hughes is about to launch a bid to sign his former goalkeeper Shay Given for QPR.

On the move? Shay Given has attracted interest from QPR

Both have since moved on, and after Joe Hart proved his worth and claimed the No 1 jersey at City, Roberto Mancini shipped Given on to Villa.

Hughes is keen to replace Paddy Kenny between the sticks at QPR, and he sees his former player as the ideal replacement.
The QPR manager is hoping to bag Given, who played in goals for Ireland on Sunday, for around £3million.

Shay Given had a rare bad ‘day in the office’ last night as Ireland lost to Croatia but that said the 36 year old is still one of the most consistent performers in the top tier and if Mark Hughes can snap up the former Newcastle United man for just £3m then that would be something of a bargain.

Mark Hughes knows Given well from their time together at Man City and the experienced custodian may well be ready to leave Aston Villa after a difficult first season at Villa Park, during which time the manager who brought him to the club, Alex McLeish, was sacked.

Given has notched up 590 club appearances, the majority of which came during his time at St James’ Park.
