Schalke say they are battling Liverpool to sign Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou.

They also have Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart at the top of their summer shopping list.

Boss Huub Stevens admitted he is desperate to boss Dutch ace Van der Vaart again after managing him at Hamburg before the 29-year-old moved to Real Madrid.

And Stevens has identified Champions League winner Kalou to join his Bundesliga side with the Ivory Coast international looking for a new club following his release from Stamford Bridge.

Schalke have steadily proven themselves as a force in the Bundesliga over the past three or four seasons but are still perhaps shy of a real push for the title and progress in Europe and the loss of Raul may well leave Huub Stevens looking to bring in alternative attacking options.

Salomon Kalou is out of contract and won’t cost a penny and is an experienced adaptable attacker that is surely being tracked by a number of sides. A move to the Bundesliga may appeal to the Ivory Coast international as he looks to secure the regular first team football he never quite managed during his six years at Stamford Bridge.#

Rafael Van der Vaart may prove a tougher nut to crack. The fact that the Dutch international’s wife works for a German national TV channel could act as a mitigating factor for a move to the country and the fact that Schalke can offer Champions League football would also tempt the 29 year old.

Van der Vaart enjoyed three years at Hamburg prior to his move to the Bernabeu.

Harry Redknapp would be loathed to lose the former Ajax and Real Madrid man but may prefer such a sale over the loss of the likes of Gareth Bale or Luka Modric but then this may not be an ‘either or’ situation.
