Chelsea’s hopes of landing Rafael da Silva have been hit by the news the defender is set to land a new deal with Manchester United.

The Blues are on the look out for a new full-back and reports had claimed they were keeping tabs on Rafael’s contract situation at Old Trafford with a view to making a bid.

However the Brazilian’s agent Cassiano Pereira claims the 21-year-old is thrilled to be extending his stay, having joined United in 2008, news which will disappoint the Blues.

Sir Alex Ferguson views the defender as a key member of his squad and Pereira is certain he will only get better as he matures and gets more experienced.

Clearly there was little or no chance that Sir Alex Ferguson would ever consider selling any of his squad to a direct rival and even less so given that the Scot clearly values Brazilian youngster Rafael. The 21 year old has racked up over 80 first team appearances for Man United and won his first senior national team cap in May and unlike his twin Fabio he appears to have a long term future at the club.

Fabio is said to be close to securing a loan move to QPR, though Benfica are also apparently keen on landing the youngster.

Chelsea have been linked with many right-back options since the decision to release Jose Bosingwa and even though Branislav Ivanovic can play in this role the Blues could well look to continue their summer spending as they look to fill the defensive slot.

Last term Man United’s right back role was filled by a number of players including Rafael, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling but perhaps the offering of a new deal could mean more first team opportunities for the Brazilian this coming season.
