Barca eye Vermaelen: Arsenal man one of three Prem stars on their hit-list
Athletic Bilbao’s Martinez is the Catalans’ top target, but Kompany, Luiz and Gunners hero are alternatives if he is too expensive
New Barcelona boss Tito Vilanova will turn his attentions to raiding the Premier League if he fails to land Athletic Bilbao defender Javi Martinez.
The Spanish giants have Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen, Chelsea’s David Luiz, who they were linked with earliert this summer, and Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany and on their hit-list if they fail to get Martinez.

Barcelona may well be in need of some defensive reinforcements given the injury and health concerns over the likes of Carles Puyol and Eric Abidal. Tito Vilanova clearly feels he can find the man he wants in the English top tier, but who will he land?
Clearly the notion of Barcelona interest will act as a huge pull on any player who may be tempted by a move away from their current club but that may not be so relevant to Man City skipper Vincent Kompany given his side’s recent success and his presumably huge pay packet.
Chelsea defender David Luiz will of course still be ‘buzzing’ having secured a Champions League crown in May however perhaps the Brazilian will find the chance to move to the Nou Camp hard to resist, not least because the Blues are still some way off the Premier League title pace having finished last term in a disappointing sixth spot.
Thomas Vermaelen however may be the most likely to be tempted by a move to the Catalan giants. The Belgian forged a solid partnership with the vastly improved Laurent Koscielny but given that Arsenal have gone seven seasons without silverware and the possibility of seeing club captain Robin Van Persie leave for pastures new, could the determined defender be coaxed into moving to Barcelona?
