Saints keen on play-as-you-play deal.
Southampton are considering recruiting injury-hit ex-England star Owen Hargreaves.
The midfielder is a free-agent after being released by Manchester City at the end of the season and Saints boss Nigel Adkins has held preliminary talks with the 31-year-old.
Hargreaves, who has 42 caps for England and has played at three major tournaments, has managed just 40 appearances in nearly five years after a catalogue of serious knee injuries.
The midfielder joined City last summer after being released by neighbours Manchester United but managed just one league appearance the whole season.
The 31-year-old has considered retiring and has been made an offer to become a pundit with the BBC.
But Saints believe the Canadian-born battler still has something to offer at the top level and are prepare to discuss a pay-as-you-play deal, coupled with a specialist training programme.
Last summer, Hargreaves posted a series of fitness videos of himself on youtube, in a bid to convince interested clubs that he was injury-free.
