Arsene Wenger looks to snap up White Hart Lane star.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is reportedly considering an audacious move to sign Tottenham midfielder Rafael Van der Vaart.
Wenger is known to be an admirer of the Dutch international, having been linked with a possible move for the attacking midfielder prior to his move from Real Madrid to White Hart Lane in August 2010. The Frenchman missed out on the goal-scoring midfielder on that occasion but is said to be ready to make an ambitious attempt to lure the Spurs man across North London.
Rafael Van der Vaart has been strongly linked with a White Hart Lane exit after his side failed to secure a Champions League berth for the coming season. Daniel Levy’s chances of keeping the creative talent have taken a further knock now that the manager who brought him to the club, Harry Redknapp, has been harshly axed by the Tottenham chairman.
The Gunners boss is said to be looking to add more goal-scoring midfield options to his side and he may feel that such a signing could help to persuade Van der Vaart’s national team-mate Robin Van Persie to put pen to paper on a new Arsenal contract.
Van der Vaart has been a very effective attacking weapon for Tottenham with the 29 year old notching up 28 goals in his two seasons at the club.
Rafael Van der Vaart has been linked with interest from Schalke but a move to Arsenal may trump a move to the Gelsenkirchen side.
Arsene Wenger is likely to offload a number of his squad as he plots sweeping changes this summer. The arrival of Lukas Podolski and probable signing of Olivier Giroud go some way to addressing the lack of effective support for Van Persie however the Arsenal manager also feels he needs more invention to help provide ammunition for his forwards and sees Van der Vaart as a possible solution.
Wenger is likely to sell Andrei Arshavin and is looking to find buyers for the likes of Denilson, Nicklas Bendtner and Carlos Vela. The Emirates Stadium club have already decided to not pursue a new move, both permanent or temporary, for Chelsea’s Yossi Benayoun so there is space to be filled in the Arsenal squad and Van der Vaart is earmarked as a target on the French boss’s wish-list.
