Tour blimey: Fergie wants Baines bought before big pre-season trip starts
United leave for South Africa on July 16 and it’s hoped the Everton defender will be with them – but a Modric swoop is looking unlikely
Manchester United are stepping up their efforts to capture Leighton Baines.
Sir Alex Ferguson has identified the Everton and England left-back as one of his summer transfer targets, and is keen to conclude a deal as swiftly as possible.
The Toffees value Baines at £20million, but United are unwilling to pay that much for the 27-year-old.
They view a fee of around £15m as more realistic.

Leighton Baines has been linked with a move to Man United for the best part of two years and given the fairly average form displayed by first choice left-back Patrice Evra, a move for the Everton man seems all the more relevant. The 27 year old England international has been a consistent performer for the Toffees over the past couple of seasons and he is a player that David Moyes will be loathed to lose but may well find it hard to prevent a deal being struck.
Everton are of course seemingly in a constant state of financial crisis and this may well lead to Moyes having to consider selling one or more of his prized assets and one would imagine that if Sir Alex Ferguson upped his offer to meet any valuation placed on the player then it would probably be begrudgingly accepted.
Baines is a very talented full-back, a player who combines the attacking aspects of his game without falling short in completing the defensive aspects of his role. He is also a mean set-piece specialist and a player who may well feel that a move to Man United would help his chances of displacing Ashley Cole in the England set-up.
