Man United Plan Move for £25m Portuguese International as Ferguson Gives Up On Modric Chase

Old Trafford side to launch bid for FC Porto midfielder.

Manchester United are reportedly ready to turn their attentions to Portugal’s star midfielder Joao Moutinho.

Reds Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson seems resigned to losing first-choice target Luka Modric to the lure of Real Madrid and a £35million fee United consider way too high.

But last season’s Premier League runners-up have moved quickly to identify a new set of targets and their scouts at Euro 2012 have urged the Red Devils to now move quickly on Porto schemer Moutinho.

Moutinho has been linked with repeated moves to England in recent seasons with both Everton and Manchester City checking on his progress.

But the 25-year-old’s showings in the European Championships has marked him down as an ideal candidate to fill a much-needed berth in the Old Trafford squad.

Moutinho is currently valued at £25million but earns a relatively modest £45,000 a week back in his homeland.

Sir Alex Ferguson seems keen to beef up his midfield options and it may be wise to move his attentions from Luka Modric to Portuguese international Joao Moutinho. The 25 year old box to box performer could well add another dimension to his Old Trafford starting eleven.

Moutinho is incredibly experienced for a player of his years, having notched up over 350 club appearances and almost 50 national team caps, securing two domestic titles and a Europa League winners medal in his two seasons at FC Porto since his move from Sporting Lisbon.

Given that Michael Carrick is getting on in years, Darren Fletcher still to make a full recovery from illness and Anderson apparently set to leave the club having failed to impress Ferguson over the past couple of campaigns.

Moutinho impressed many with his performances at Euro 2012 and given Sir Alex Ferguson’s penchant of bringing in players from the Portuguese league there seems a real chance this deal could come to fruition.

Ferguson has brought in the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Bebe and Anderson, perhaps Joao Moutinho could be the next players to follow this path to Old Trafford.
