Former Aston Villa man reunites with Martin O’Neill.
Carlos Cuellar signs for Sunderland on a two-year contract
Sunderland have signed Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar on a two-year deal after his contract at Aston Villa expired.
It will be the second time Cuellar has worked with Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill, who brought him into English football in 2008.

This is an excellent bit of business by Martin O’Neill. The Northern Irish boss signed Carlos Cuellar for Aston Villa four years ago in a deal that cost a whopping £7.8m and now the Black Cats manager has picked up the Spaniard for nothing following the defender’s Villa Park departure.
Cuellar’s arrival coincides with O’Neill’s willingness to allow George McCartney to leave the Stadium of Light and return to Upton Park.
Cuellar notched up 123 appearances for Aston Villa and is the type of hard working adaptable player that O’Neill likes to include among his squad.
