Tattooed engine man wanted in Serie A.
Napoli are keen on a move for Chelsea midfielder Raul Meireles and will seek talks with the player’s agent this week, reports Tuttosport.
The Italian club have identified the Portuguese as a key transfer target this summer but may face competition from Tottenham, whose new boss Andre Villas-Boas signed Meireles for Chelsea.
The 29-year-old is just one season into a four-year deal at Stamford Bridge but Napoli manager Walter Mazzarri believes big-spending Chelsea can be convinced to sell the midfielder, who starred for Portugal at Euro 2012.
Mazzarri has money to spend after forward Ezequiel Lavezzi completed a £20.8 million move to mega-rich PSG this weekend but is unwilling to pay more than the £5.6 million the European Champions paid Liverpool for Meireles.
Chelsea are under no pressure to sell the tattoo-covered star and are likely to demand more, particularly if Tottenham enter the race for his signature.
The Blues are long-term admirers of Napoli’s hulking forward Edison Cavani and may be tempted to use the Serie A club’s interest in Meireles as leverage to pursue a deal for the Uruguayan striker.
