Italian owners rejected by star.
Watford have been thwarted in their attempts to bring World Cup winner Alessandro Nesta to Vicarage Road.
The club’s new Italian owners – who appointed former West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola as boss over the weekend – contacted Nesta, 36, last week about joining the Championship club.
Nesta is a free-agent after his contract with AC Milan expired but he told the north London club he was joining MLS side Montreal Impact.
The stalwart is considered one of the finest centre-halves of his generation and is a four-time member of UEFA’s coveted team of the year.
The stopper has spent the past ten years at Milan, after joining from Lazio in 2002. He has 78 caps for Italy and part of the squad that won the World Cup in 2006.
