Sir Alex Ferguson may well be in the market for another striker given that Michael Owen has been released and Dimitar Berbatov could be looking for a summer move away from Old Trafford. Athletic Bilbao forward Fernando Llorente has been consistently linked with a move away from his San Mames club for two or three years but perhaps this could be the time the giant forward opts to leave the Basque club.

Llorente has been a regular at Athletic Bilbao for eight seasons and has been a prolific marksman over the past four seasons, last term being his most consistent with the 6ft 5in forward netting 30 goals in all competitions.

However his form was not good enough to warrant a single minute of playing time at the Euro 2012 finals, and whilst it’s true that Vicente del Bosque opted in the main to play without strikers that didn’t stop Fernando Torres, Alvaro Negredo and Pedro all getting a look-in.

Therefore a high profile move to Man United could help Llorente force his way into a regular spot in the Spanish national team starting eleven.

Ferguson may also feel an extra need to beef up an attack that has seen Javier Hernandez go seriously off the boil. However Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney both had individually successful seasons last term.
