Arsenal Told to Pay Record Breaking £16m Fee for Player They Don’t Need

Emirates Stadium side not likely to pursue target any longer.

Arsenal will have to shell-out £16million if they want to land France international goalkeeper Hugo Lloris from Lyon.

Club president Jean-Michel Aulas has revealed Lloris would jump at the chance to join on of Europe’s elite clubs and has announced the 20million euro fee is the expected market value.
However, if Arsene Wenger, or any of Europe’s other top clubs want Lloris they have just a small window of opportunity to make their move.

Aulas told the club’s website: ‘A certain number of players were not good enough last season and will leave or at least be placed on the transfer list.

‘Hugo told me he would like to leave if an offer comes in from one of the biggest five clubs in Europe.
‘If one of these clubs makes an offer that matches his market value, in other words 20m (£16m) Euros then he can go.
‘If there is no offer before July 15 he will remain at the club for the coming season.
‘For the moment there has been no offer from Arsenal or anywhere else.’

OK, so this isn’t going to happen.

Arsenal have a very good number starting keeper in Wojciech Szczesny, a player with a great deal of potential and at 22 a baby in goalie terms, and whilst it may not be a bad idea to bring in an experienced back-up option to keep the Pole on his toes, Arsene Wenger simply will not make an offer of this magnitude for French international Hugo Lloris.

Whilst Gunners fans may rightly be angry with the fact that their North London club rarely spends big the flip side is they also rarely waste money. If Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas really wants £16m for Lloris then they will have to find a club willing to spend huge sums on the goalie because Arsenal will simply never meet that asking price, a price that would exceed the club’s record transfer fee spend.

Robin Van Persie yesterday announced his intention to leave the Emirates Stadium and though Wenger has brought in £23m worth of new attacking talent in Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud the truth is that Arsenal are not likely to splash the cash in an excessive manner and if they are to spend more money this summer it will not be on a substitute keeper.
