Brendan Rodgers Set to Make £7m Italian His First Liverpool Signing

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers steps up negotiations to make Roma striker Fabio Borini his first signing
Brendan Rodgers is close to making Roma forward Fabio Borini his first signing as Liverpool manager following lengthy negotiations in Italy.

The Italy Under-21 international, who made his full international debut against the US in February, moved to Parma initially, but was immediately loaned out to Roma, who are believed to have an option to buy for £7 million.

Despite failing to make an impact at Chelsea, Borini has flourished on his return to his homeland and Rodgers saw enough of him at Swansea to believe he is good enough to slot into the Liverpool team on the right of a three-man strike-force.

The deal is slightly complicated by the fact Borini is co-owned by Parma and Roma, with each holding a 50 per cent stake, which means Liverpool will have to reach an agreement with both clubs to finalise the move.

However, it is unlikely Liverpool would be expected to pay much more than the £7m price Roma had agreed with Parma as part of their loan agreement.

Rodgers knows Borini very well, he took charge of the Italian during his stint as Chelsea’s youth team coach and again when he brought the striker in on loan during his successful campaign to take Swansea City into the Premier League. Now the Northern Irishman wants to make the 21 yaer old his first signing as Liverpool manager.

Borini was part of Cesare Prandelli’s Euro 2012 squad and is considered a player with great potential but seemingly a player that Roma and Parma are willing to sell this summer.

The former Bologna youth team player moved to Stamford Bridge as a 16 year old and spent four years at the West London club but failed to break into the first team. A loan spell at the Liberty Stadium saw the Italian net six goals in nine matches before he was sold to Parma and then immediately loaned out to co-owners Roma.

Last term the speedy forward netted 11 goals in Serie A and earned his spot in the senior Italian national team set-up.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will be all to aware of his side’s threadbare attack. The Merseyside club depends a great deal on Uruguayan Luis Suarez for both creativity and end product. Andy Carroll improved as last term worn on but is still some way from the finished article. The only other recognised forward the club possesses is veteran Craig Bellamy so there is a very real need to beef up on firepower this summer.
