Man United to Launch Move for Athletic Bilbao Pair as Sir Alex Ferguson Looks to Take Advantage of Uncertainty at Basque Club

Old Trafford boss keen on talented Spanish international duo.

Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to take advantage of the uncertain situation Athletic Bilbao find themselves in following the apparently imminent departure of the La Liga well respected manager Marcelo Bielsa as the Scot looks to reignite his interest in Spanish internationals Iker Muniain and Javi Martinez.

Marcelo Bielsa was involved in an altercation with a construction company representative who had been overseeing work on new training facilities. The Basque have since attacked Bielsa over his behaviour and the former Argentine national team coach has not returned to oversee the club’s pre-season activities since.

This has led to speculation that Bielsa and Athletic Bilbao are set to part company leaving the San Mames vulnerable to the attentions of prospective suitors for their most sought after performers.

Sir Alex Ferguson has consistently been linked with interest in box to box midfielder Javi Martinez and will now prepare an offer for the 23 year old. The adaptable Spaniard has been a regular in the Bilbao side over the past six seasons and is said to also be a Barcelona target.

The Man United boss is keen to bring in fresh midfield options this summer and hopes to add an injection of youth to the centre of the park where his current options are the likes of Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes. Darren Fletcher is yet to recover from illness and Brazilian Anderson could well be on his way out having failed to impress over the past couple of seasons.

Ferguson is also keen on teenage attack Iker Muniain who is considered by many as one of the hottest prospects in Spanish football. The 19 year old came of age last term, becoming a regular in Bielsa’s forward line notching up 58 appearances in all competitions.

The Pamplona born starlet narrowly missed out on a berth in Vicente del Bosque’s Euro 2012 squad and is also subject to a great deal of interest.

Athletic Bilbao have always had a history of retaining a large proportion of their homegrown talents but having finished last term in a disappointing 10th place club president Josu Urrutia may have to consider selling those players who feel their careers would be best suited away from the Basque side.

Sir Alex Ferguson has adopted a youthful transfer policy over the past couple of seasons, and seen the fruits of this path with the instant impact made by the likes of Javier Hernandez, David de Gea, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling and having brought in Shinji Kagawa and Nick Powell from Borussia Dortmund and Crewe Alexandra respectively the Man United manager is hoping to bring in one, or both, of these talented Athletic Bilbao youngsters.
