Arsenal Hand Trial to French Wonderkid M’Baye Niang

Emirates interested in Caen forward.

Arsenal are set to take French starlet M’Baye Niang on trial, but his new coach has told him not to go.

The Gunners have made their move for the highly-rated 17-year-old forward, who is also being tracked by Newcastle and Stoke.

It is understood that Niang will link up with Arsenal this week but new Caen coach Patrice Garande does not believe he should be looking to leave at this point.

“What I say in relation to him is simple, he has talent – yes, does he have the potential to make a career – yes,” he said.

“But is he doing the right thing for this at the moment – no.”

Whilst it’s clear that Arsene Wenger is adept at picking up talented youngsters and making the most of their potential it’s probable that Arsenal fans are not looking to the Gunners boss to unearth another ‘New Big Thing’ and would prefer to read about the North London side putting in a big money move for an established star this summer.

To be fair to Wenger he has spent wisely thus far, bringing in Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud for a combined fee of around £23m but the likely departure of Robin Van Persie is sure to anger Arsenal supporters who worry about the investment in the club’s squad, a club that has now gone seven seasons without silverware and moved steadily further from mounting a genuine Premier League title challenge.

None of this is to say that there is no merit in looking at bringing in fresh young talent, just that Arsenal fans would probably like a more balanced approach to squad building as opposed to one that is geared more predominantly to the future, leading to what seems like a permanent state of transition.

17 year old M’Baye Niang is a quality youngster who last became a regular performer for Ligue 1 side Caen, who last term were relegated to the second tier, perhaps fueling talk of a departure for the 6ft forward. Tottenham and Man City were both strongly linked with the teenager, who was capped at French Under 21 level at age 16.
