Arsenal & Barcelona In Battle to Land £9.5m Enforcer

Emirates Stadium side fight Nou Camp outfit for highly rated defensive midfielder.

Arsenal face a battle with La Liga giants Barcelona to secure the services of £9.5m-rated Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue.

talkSPORT revealed last week that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has lined up a move for Capoue after cooling his interest in Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila.

However, reports in the Catalan media suggest that new Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova has identified Capoue and M’Vila as potential replacements for Seydou Keita, who has ended his four-year Nou Camp spell to join Chinese club Dalian Aerbin.

Arsenal could well be looking to bring in an out and out defensive midfield option, not least because Alex Song has matured into a move complete performer, able to put in quality assists as well as his fair share of crunching tackles. Arsene Wenger’s pursuit of Rennes man Yann M’Vila cooled after the Ligue 1 side demanded a very inflated fee for the French international.

Barcelona are also in the market for an enforcer, especially with all round performer Seydou Keita leaving the club. New Nou Camp boss Tito Vilanova has the likes of Javier Mascherano and Sergio Busquets but may feel that Capoue is a worthy addition to his squad.

23 year old Capoue is on the fringes of the senior French national team set-up and had a standout season last term and appears to have outgrown the Toulouse side he joined at the age of 17.
